FOUR consortia have reportedly submitted bids for the contract to design and build the seventh line of the Riyadh automated metro.
According to Middle East Economic Digest (MEED), the following consortia are bidding for the project after submitting bids to the Royal Commission for Riyadh City on January 31:
- Alstom, WeBuild, and Nesma, Saudi Arabia. Typsa and Ayesa of Spain, along with Aecom, are acting as design consultants
- Siemens and FCC, bidding with local firms Freyssinnet Contracting and Almabani. Design will be provided by Idom, Spain, and Dowha, Korea
- Hitachi Rail, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), with Turkish firms Kalyon and Cengiz, and Albawani, Saudi Arabia. Design will be provided by Sener and Jacobs, and
- CRRC with Turkish construction firms Mapa and Limak.
The 65km automated metro line will run in tunnel for 47km, with 19km of elevated infrastructure. It will have 19 stations, including 14 underground, running from King Khalid International Airport via Diriyah to Al-Musahmiya in Qiddiya, a new city under construction as a leisure and tourist destination.
Riyadh’s six-line network currently extends to 176km with 85 stations, and opened in three phases from December 2024.
Contractors were selected to construct the 8.4km extension to Line 2 in July 2025. More
